Burning Season
Beginning in January and subsiding around April is Thailand's burning season. To prepare their fields for new crops, Thai farmers burn plants and materials from the previous year. It's a quick way to clear fields and provide nutrients for new growth, but it also has a dangerous impact on the environment and people's respiratory health. When people think of burning season, they typically think of Chiang Mai, where very visible air pollution covers the city. However, these photos are from Chachoengsao, the province where I was living for 1 year.
Night Fishing
From the highway, it might appear that the night sky never ends. The almost black sky reflects on the blue ocean water, creating one seamless backdrop of darkness. Tiny headlamps bob and turn, cutting the fog, their movement the only indicator that they differ from the stars above. Here, Thai fishermen in knee-high rain boots are searching for crabs and small fish.
